The Evolution Archery Story

We started this because we kept seeing the same problem pop up in schools and camps.

Educators are expected to run activities that are engaging, inclusive, and safe — often with big groups, mixed abilities, limited time, and not much spare staff. A lot of programs look good on paper but fall apart once they hit the field.

Our focus has always been on building activities that actually work in real conditions. Not just fun for the confident kids, but structured in a way that keeps everyone involved, supported, and moving.

Everything we run is built around simple systems: clear briefings, easy-to-follow rules, and activity flow that reduces downtime and behaviour issues. The goal is to make it easier for facilitators and teachers to manage groups while keeping students engaged and learning.

We deliver structured archery and Arrow Tag programs across schools, camps, and youth settings. Sessions are flexible by design, so they can be scaled up or down depending on age, group size, space, and time available. That makes them suitable for single sessions, full-day rotations, camps, and repeat programs.

How we approach engagement and inclusion

Across all programs, the same principles guide how sessions are run: • briefings that are clear, efficient, and easy for students to understand • activity design that keeps all participants involved, not just the confident athletes • formats that can be adapted for different ages, abilities, and learning needs • rotations and rules that reduce waiting around and improve behaviour • delivery methods refined through constant real-world use, not theory

We use purpose-designed equipment as part of a broader facilitation system. Gear alone doesn’t create a good session — structure does. Equipment choices are paired with instruction and game design that build confidence, support safety, and encourage full participation.

Programs have been delivered in a wide range of settings, including schools and camps supporting students with physical impairments and diverse learning needs. That experience has shaped a delivery style that prioritises clarity, consistency, and inclusion on the field.

Rather than focusing purely on competition or performance, sessions emphasise participation, teamwork, and skill development within a controlled and supportive environment.

The model continues to evolve through ongoing delivery, feedback from educators, and time spent on the field. The aim is simple: help schools and camps run outdoor activities that are engaging, inclusive, and realistic to deliver — even when conditions aren’t perfect.

About the facilitator

My name is Mahu, and I come from an outdoor education background with extensive experience delivering programs in schools, camps, and on international expeditions. I’ve spent years leading student expeditions with World Challenge, where clear communication, preparation, risk awareness, and group dynamics are critical to success.

That experience has strongly shaped how programs are now designed and facilitated. The same principles used on expedition — clear systems, adaptable leadership, and structured decision-making — are applied to school and camp environments to help activities run safely, inclusively, and effectively with large and diverse groups.

HOW TO PLAY

Evolution archery is an activity where participants use bows and foam-tipped arrows to engage in mock battle.

The gameplay is very similar to dodgeball. The basic game has 2 opposing teams and each goes to one side of the arena.

On the referee's call, both teams run to the centre of the arena, collect as many arrows as they can and run for cover.

Players load their arrows and try to hit a player on the opposing team.

You can dodge, hide behind obstacles or crouch to avoid incoming fire. When you get the chance you release your arrow and if you hit a player they are out…but be careful - if they catch your arrow YOU are out !

EQUIPMENT

Full face mask

Although the tips of the arrows are very soft, face protection is important. Our high quality face masks are designed to protect you as well as give excellent vision.

Bow and Arrow

Archery tag mask

We use 22 pound bows that are easy to load but have enough impact to make an exciting game but safe game.

Arrows have large foam tips that absorb the impact when it hits your body -  leaving no marks or bruises.
